Top 10 Time Savers for Busy Moms

Being a mother today is no easy feat. Moms today are expected to be the ultimate multi-taskers: private tutors, chauffeurs, chefs, personal shoppers, nurses, laundresses, household managers, vacation planners, computer and media monitors, schedulers, cheerleaders and overall household managers. Wouldn’t it be nice to save a few extra minutes each day on necessary chores? Well, you can. Here are some time savers every busy mom can use.
  1. Put like utensils in the same holder in the dishwasher (knives with knives, small forks with small forks, etc). When it’s time to unload the dishwasher, it will be a quicker job.
  2. Wash all fruits and veggies as soon as you bring them home from the grocery store. When it’s time to cook, this task will already be done.
  3. Put empty garbage bags at the bottom of each trashcan. When you take one filled bag out, another clean one is ready and right there to replace it.
  4. Take one day to make meals for the entire week. Place them in microwaveable containers and store them either in the freezer or refrigerator.
  5. Keep your keys in the same place each and every time. Nothing wastes time more than looking for a lost set of keys. When you come inside the house, always hang them in exactly the same place.
  6. Have one centralized and organized system for bills. When it comes time to pay them, they’re all together and neatly organized.
  7. Create a “To Do” list everyday. Mark off items as you complete them. Carry over any unfinished items to the next day.
  8. Carry juice boxes and sugar-free snacks in your glove box. It will keep the kids from going crazy in traffic jams and will save you that extra trip to the fast food restaurant on the way home.
  9. Stick to routine, whenever possible. Kids are more likely to cooperate with the game plan when it is part of their regular routine. Structure and routines can be a busy mom’s best defense against insanity.
  10. Double up. Every time you cook, make more than you need and freeze the rest for another time.

Top 10 Tips to Make Traveling Easier

Traveling can be very taxing, especially if you’re traveling with children. Take out some of the stress with a little pre-planning and these travel tips.

For air trips:

1. Make sure you have enough time between your flights: When your airline rep or the online scheduler tries to force you to have a connection of less than about 90 minutes, see if there's another option. If the website won't let you, call the associated phone number. Sure, you might end up sitting in the airport for several hours, but that's better than sitting there for several days because you missed your connecting flight and the airline can't (or won't!) book you on another one.

2. Plan for delays: Right now, flights just are delayed. More and more, delay is to be expected, particularly if you're not flying direct or are coming out of a major airport. Sometimes, delay is even planned into the flight schedule when leaving from some airports (my experience, for example, is that the airlines pad by about 30 minutes when scheduling a flight from LAX). It's easy to pick up a book or a journal and have it with you, just in case. And sitting down to read when you have to wait reduces your stress and that of the people around you.

3. Fly out of a smaller airport: This isn't an option for everyone, but when it is, take it. It's worth the extra $20, $20, or $50 to fly from an airport with shorter security lines and more accessible airline agents. Think of it as paying yourself for the time you save because you don't have to arrive as early or stand in line as long. Plus, flights from smaller airports are more likely to be on time than flights from major airports.

4. Know your rights: While airlines aren't held to it by law, there exists an Air Passenger's Bill of Rights. Some airlines also have their own. Though it's not law, being able to quote an established document gives you some ground to stand on if you end up in a dispute with your airline.

5. Travel light: If you don't have a bag to check, life at the airport is much easier. With many airlines, you can check in at a kiosk and not have to stand in line. You don't have to worry about lost luggage. You don't have to wait for your luggage when you arrive at your destination.

6. Stay organized with Portable Jewelry Cases by Keli’s Kreations. The Diva Deluxe, Diva Lite and Diva Petite all keep her necklaces, bracelets and earrings organized and completely tangle-free.

For road trips with kids:

7. Buy a back seat organizer. It flips over the front seat so your child in the back seat can get to it. It organizes everything in one place and provides a surface for drawing, coloring, etc.

8. Take small snacks in small packages. Sandwich bags work great. Feed your child something healthy, not just candy. This will make sure they don't get sugar highs and lows, making your trip a lot more pleasant.

9. Take a portable DVD player and DVD's, or let your child watch a DVD in your in-car DVD player. Don't forget the earphones and extra batteries.

10. Make sure your child has a comfortable place to rest his/her head when tired. Bring a pillow or two and a blanket to make him or her a little more comfortable.

Top 10 Spring Cleaning Tips

Like it or not, it’s time to think about spring cleaning. Unless you’re one of those annoying, compulsive year round cleaners, this once-a-year task can feel overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be if you break the entire job into smaller, “do-able” tasks that can be completed separately and over the course of a week or two.
  1. Go from top to bottom: Always start at the top and work your way down. Start on the upper level of your home. Also, start at the top of a bookshelf and work your way down. The final step should be to clean floors or rugs.
  2. Take one room at a time: Do not attempt to clean the entire house at one time. This will save your sanity, and ensure that the job gets done at your own pace.
  3. Declutter: Divide unwanted items into piles of things you’ll give away, sell, trash or keep. Cleaning is an easier when you don’t have to navigate around piles of junk.
  4. Hard-to-reach places: Whether you have hardwood floors or carpeting, move all furniture and give the hard-to-reach places behind and beneath the furniture a good cleaning.
  5. Under the refrigerator: Use an automobile snow brush to get crumbs and dust under the fridge.
  6. Window washing: Wash windows horizontally on the inside and vertically on the outside. If they streak, you’ll know which side to redo.
  7. Musty odors: Put unwrapped soap bars or fabric softener sheets in drawers, suitcases and storage boxes to get rid of musty and stale odors.
  8. Pillows: Freshen pillows by putting them in the dryer on a low setting for about ten minutes.
  9. Store away winter clothes: Blankets, sweaters and jackets can be bulky and take up a great deal of storage space. Use a compression storage bag and vacuum out the air. By utilizing these handy dandy storage bags, you’ll free up a considerable amount of storage space.
  10. Be happy. Nobody really likes spring cleaning, but it's a necessary evil. Why not make the most of it by turning on some "happy" music to remain upbeat? Think about the fun things you will do once your chore is completed.
